Communal exclusion can harm Karnataka, says Biocon chie fKiran Mazumdar- Shaw asks CM Bom

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Amidst the row over barring Muslim traders at temple fairs in Karnataka, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson of Biocon, has urged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to resolve the “growing religious divide”. She warned that allowing any “communal exclusion” would destroy the State’s position in the global leadership in the technology and biotech sectors.

Posting a media report over Muslim shopkeepers being kept out of fairs, Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw tweeted: “Karnataka has always forged inclusive economic development and we must not allow such communal exclusion. If IT/BT became communal, it would destroy our global leadership. Please resolve this growing religious divide.” She tagged Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in the tweet.

In yet another tweet, she said: “Unfortunately vested interests are hijacking the issue... I am confident our CM Bommai will resolve the matter peacefully. I am a proud Kannadiga and don’t want to see these incidents detract from economic progress. All parties need to work towards this.”

Responding to the tweet, Mr. Bommai said that Karnataka was known for peace and progress, and everyone should work towards maintaining it. “It is possible to sit together and resolve differences,” he said. Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Shaw said: “I welcome the Chief Minister’s suggestion to sit together and resolve differences.”

In Lok Sabha

Meanwhile, in a counter to Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw, BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya said: “It is unfortunate to see people like Kiran Shaw impose their personal, politically coloured opinion, and conflate it with India’s leadership in the ITBT sector. Rahul Bajaj once said something similar for Gujarat, it is today a leading automobile manufacturing hub. Go figure…”

The issue echoed in the Lok Sabha as well, with Bahujan Samaj Party member Danish Ali raising it during the Zero Hour.

Mr. Ali referred to the tweet by Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw and said: “There is an atmosphere of intolerance in the country. She is a big corporate and she has said this [religious divide] will pose a threat to India’s corporate leadership. Investment will also be affected. When corporate houses have started expressing this, I would urge the government to end this,” Mr. Ali said in the House.
